Timor Aust (Canberra)

An Australian soldier was killed in East Timor when a gun accidentally discharged in
the back of a vehicle.

The defence department says 27-year-old Corporal STUART JONES a member of the Darwin-based
2 Cavalry Regiment, was killed late yesterday while on patrol near Maliana, close to the
border with West Timor.

He was travelling on one of the army's eight-wheeled light armoured vehicles when a
rifle was accidentally fired into his chest.

Corporal JONES died while being flown by helicopter to hospital in Dili.

He's the second Australian soldier to die in East Timor, following the death of a soldier
from pneumonia.

A defence spokesman says Corporal JONES, who was unmarried, had only arrived in East
Timor on July 25.

Head of the Australian force in East Timor, Colonel GREG BAKER, has expressed condolences
to Corporal JONES' family for this tragedy.

He's told ABC radio accident occurred about 5 pm local time yesterday near Maliana,
within the Australian area of operations.

BAKER says there were a number of weapons in the back of the vehicle and one of them
accidentally discharged, hitting him in the left chest shoulder region.
