Qld: Report calls for cut in car use

A report shows the number of cars using Queensland roads is unhealthy and unsustainable.

The Queensland parliamentary Travelsafe committee has released a report into publictransport in the state's south-east.

Committee chairman JIM PEARCE has told state parliament almost four-in-five trips weretaken by cars.

He says that's unhealthy and unsustainable.

And he says governments and councils need to work together to improve public transport.

Mr PEARCE suggests the Queensland government could take a lead in cutting down carusage by encouraging the private sector to car pool and by building secure bicycle parking.

Liberal leader BOB QUINN says the committee was wrong to dismiss setting up an integratedtransport authority.
