FED: Qantas flies Aboriginal art across Australian skies
SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - Aboriginal art has literally taken off, with the launching ofa Qantas aircraft emblazoned with indigenous designs.
Sydney's Balarinji Studio and indigenous artist Rene Kulitja have decorated one ofthe aircraft from Qantas's new fleet of 15 Boeing 737-800s with Aboriginal images, includingUluru.
The aircraft, named Yananyi Dreaming (Yananyi is Aboriginal for travelling), was welcomedto Australia with a special ceremony performed by singers and dancers from the Mutitjulucommunity at Uluru.
The fleet has cost the airline $1.5 billion and will be fully operational by Augustto service Australia's domestic travellers.
Qantas executive general manager sales and marketing, John Borghetti, said the airlinehad two similarly decorated 747s flying on international routes.
He said the fleet would meet the demand created by the collapse of Ansett Airlinesand stir growth in all sectors of the domestic tourism industry.
"The 737-800 fleet will fly routes serving Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast,Adelaide, Cairns and Ayers Rock (Uluru)," Mr Borghetti said.
